Paranormal activity refers to any event or situation outside the scope of modern scientific reasoning, such as UFO sightings, the Roswell crash, the predictions of Nostradamus and other curiosities.

The Vampire Belfazaar Ashantison

ABC's "20/20" did a story on the world of real-life vampires: people who claim they suffer from a physiological condition that prevents them from "creating enough of the essential daily energies to get through even the basic tasks." How do they get this energy? They drink blood. And there's an entire, widespread, secretive society that practices this belief, headed by a man who goes by the name Belfazaar Ashantison. "I am a vampire," said Belfazaar. "My method of getting to that energy source is through the blood."

Skip to 01:45 in this video to watch Belfazaar drink the blood of a willing donor right off of his back. At 03:00, you can find a woman doing the same thing.

6 Missed Connections

The residents living near O&rsquoHare International Airport, Chicago, have often reported receiving strange visitors at their houses. On hearing knocking on their doors, they have answered them to find someone standing on their doorstep explaining that they &ldquohave to make a connection&rdquo or &ldquofind their luggage.&ldquo Before the homeowners can inquire further, the person vanishes.

On the highway nearby, strange lights have been witnessed by motorists along with unexplained figures wandering along the roadside. If you were to spend some time at the airport itself, you might feel a sudden drop in temperature accompanied by screams coming from an adjacent field.

These phenomena have been attributed to a devastating crash that took place in May 1979 when an American Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-10, flight 191, crashed shortly after take-off due to one of its engines falling off. With its fuel tanks full, the plane was consumed in a fireball. All 271 people on board and two people on the ground were killed. The paranormal activity continues to this day, and if you are brave enough to seek first-hand experience of it, then a local company offers ghost tours where you can camp out next to the airport for a night. [5]

How should Christians view paranormal activity?

It would appear that modern culture is no longer content with fictional accounts of paranormal activity. Instead, people crave the real thing. On any given day, you can drive past a palm-reading shop, check into a haunted hotel, and flip on the TV to watch a ghost-hunting reality show. Evidence of witchcraft used to result in being burned at the stake—now it's money-making entertainment. Like the witch of Endor, however, (1 Samuel 28:1-25) no person can really know or control the paranormal, and to invite a power you don't know can be incredibly dangerous.

"Paranormal" and "supernatural" describe that part of the cosmos that is not bound by the natural law that ordains the operation of the universe. There is no inherent physicality to the paranormal and the physical cannot create or control it—only the spiritual can. And the only spiritual powers are God and demons.

We see God's supernatural power every day. Acts 17:28 says, "In him we live and move and have our being." Life is impossible without the ever-present work of God. On occasion, God empowers His angels to interact with people on earth such that we may experience godly paranormal activity. But, like the witch of Endor knew, we cannot control or dictate God's supernatural work in our lives. We can only be surprised when it appears.

The other source of supernatural power is demonic. That's an important point to stress: if the paranormal activity is not of God, it is demonic. Period. There is no other type of paranormal activity and there is no neutral paranormal activity. There is God, and there are demons who want to destroy us. We cannot direct demonic power any more than we can control God's power—the Bible teaches that the whole world is under the sovereignty of demonic forces (1 John 5:19). But demons are above all else deceptive (John 8:44). They will allow us to think we are in command, when really they are drawing us further under their influence.

"Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons" (1 Timothy 4:1). Interest in paranormal activity has always had a place in human history, but the Bible teaches that interest will increase as the end times approach.

We need to be alert. There are two ways the enemy can draw us into his world. One is by making old threats appear harmless. Astrology has become entertainment. Palmistry is seen as a lark. New age meditation is being used as a therapeutic device. Another way demonic power gets in is by coming from a direction we weren't expecting. Are hologram bracelets and magnet therapy demonic? They are if they lead people into the world of energy medicine and Eastern philosophy.

The Bible is clear what we should do in regards to ungodly paranormal activity: avoid it. Ephesians 4:27 says to not give it a foothold. James 4:7 says that confrontations with Satan are inevitable, but if we resist him, he will flee. We are not to seek out demonic paranormal activity, even for the purpose of defeating it (Jude 1:8-10).

This includes seemingly benign entertainment that references demons. No Ouija boards, no TV shows that claim to find ghosts, and no haunted houses. Demons are similar to the vampires of mythology—they can be difficult to find, but once they are invited in, they are nearly impossible to get rid of. The best defense is to follow Psalm 101:4: "A perverse heart shall be far from me I will know nothing of evil."

We cannot control paranormal forces, but God can. It is only through Him that we can be protected. In Ephesians 6:10-18, He tells us how. When confronted with a spiritual enemy, use spiritual weapons. The belt of truth will remind us Who is in control and how the enemy wishes to destroy us. The breastplate of righteousness will protect us because light has nothing to do with dark. The shoes of the gospel allow us to stand firm against attack, knowing that our foundation is Christ. The shield of faith in God will make Satan's specific arrows ineffectual, as we choose to rely on what God says instead of Satan's lies. The helmet of salvation protects us intellectually our thoughts can be at peace when we remember Christ has already rescued us. And, like Jesus when He was being tempted, we can use the truth of Scripture to disarm the lies of the enemy.

That's a nice picture, but what does it mean? It means we can't be fully protected by God if we have not trusted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. It means we need to know the truth of Who God is and who we are in Christ, and know Scripture so that we can use it to remind ourselves of the truth. And we need to act on what Scripture says—"Abhor what is evil hold fast to what is good" (Romans 12:9), and "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil …" (James 4:7). If we refuse to hate evil and cling to good, we shouldn't be surprised if evil clings to us.

Paranormal: Activity and Events

Dare to be scared and let your 1st or next ghost adventure be at this historic, enchanting and
haunted location! Be a Ghost Hunter for a night while investigating Missouri's most haunted
castle and one of the most haunted locations in the Mid-West.

Pythian Castle has been featured in such paranormal shows as "Children of the Grave", "Ghost
Lab", "The Haunted Collector" and "Ghost Adventures" along with being in various paranormal
books, news articles and other media! Paranormal Task Force (PTF) has been featured in
various paranormal shows and documentaries which have aired on SyFy, Chiller, Destination
America, Travel Chanel and more. Such includes "Children of the Grave", "The Haunted Boy
(The Exorcist File)", “Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files”, "Ghost Adventures" and more.

Originally built around 1911 by the Knights of Pythias for use as a home for widows and orphans
where dark hidden secrets and tragic events went untold for years. The Castle later became
part of the Army's O'Reilly Hospital Complex in 1942 and served as the Service Club for enlisted
men. It was during this period that the Castle also started serving a plethora of unexplainable
activity. During WWII the O'Reilly Complex also housed three or more wards of POW's. Many of
them were interrogated within the walls of the Castle and tales from visiting veterans over the
years sometimes tell of "not so happy" endings. In 1947 the Castle became part of the Veterans
Administration 500 bed tuberculosis hospital until 1952 when vacated. From that time forward it
served as many uses until being bought by the current owner in 2003.

With it's eloquent charm, mystic atmosphere, mysterious past, lovely hosts and an abundance
of occurring unexplainable events this is one place that you want to add to your "places to
visit before you pass on" list. When you indulge yourself within this building once, you will find
yourself with an addiction to return multiple times to experience more of what it has to offer.

Your 8 hour learning, fun and sometimes scary adventure into the paranormal realms will start
with a pre-investigative introductory meeting with Paranormal Task Force, followed by a
informative presentation and walking tour of the Castle by one of their experienced tour
guides! Afterwards you will be given an informative presentation about the paranormal
investigative equipment you will be able to use and will see in action during your journey. You
and members of your party will then be in one of three groups that will rotate through the three
floors of the Castle, where you will be able to both explore and/or interact with PTF team
members and learn various investigative techniques and more about the paranormal.

After the rotations you will be able to refuel your energy during the midnight meal break where
you will be served pizza, other snacks and may even be one of the winners of the free
attendance raffle we hold. Afterwards, you will then be able to explore throughout the Castle
on your own or with the assistance of a PTF team member until the event is over at 3 a.m.

Everyone will have the opportunity to investigate with investigators of Paranormal Task Force
and to use equipment and receive paranormal field training as desired.

Long and Banta families. Many were born and even passed away within its walls. Some still call
it their home today. Visitors have reported seeing shadow figures, hearing disembodied
voices and experiencing other unexplainable activity.

The Austin-Milam-Lucas Store started as a rustic log cabin built in 1797 by Moses Austin, the
father of Stephen Austin. As you may know, Stephen is known as the "Father of Texas". As a
log cabin store it saw "Trail Of Tears" victims in 1830 and then invading confederate soldiers in
1864. Through the following years it was added onto then turned into a boarding house. In
1932, a bank clerk named Frank Flynn ended his own like by shooting himself in the heart with a

shadow figures, disembodied voices, phantom foot steps, being touched by the unseen and
more within these walls!

The Old Presbyterian Church is the oldest Presbyterian Church standing west of the Mississippi
River as it was built in 1833. It served as a church until 1907 and then afterwards used as the
Masonic Auditorium, school gymnasium, silent movie theater, Boy Scouts meeting hall and now
as a museum. Visitors have reported hearing footsteps of someone who was not there,
significant unexplained temperature changes and more! Do residents of the adjacent
cemeteries still gather there today?

We would like to take a moment to say THANK YOU to all of
our supporters who have attended our various workshops,
presentations and overnight events through the years. It is
because of you that since 01/01/2007 Paranormal Task
Force (PTF) has raised over $75,000 for various historical
societies and locations which has aided greatly with part of
our mission concerning historical preservation!

Due to COVID 19 concerns - We will have Hand Sanitizing stations set up for use, sanitizing all
hand held equipment before issuing and after collection, utilizing disposable gloves when
handling items and practicing "social distancing".

This event will also have 50% or less than our normal amount of attendees to allow plenty of
room for "social distancing" while you explore for paranormal activity! We know everyone
wants to get out there and ghost hunt and we want to make sure that all of you stay safe while
having a good time.

Dare to be scared and let your 1st or next ghost adventure be at the historic and haunted Tri
County Truck Stop (formerly The Diamonds Restaurant)on old historic Route 66 in Villa Ridge,
MO (about 40 miles west of St. Louis right off of Hwy 44)! Be a Ghost Hunter for a night while
investigating Missouri's most haunted truck stop and one of the most haunted locations in the
Mid-West.

Tri County Truck Stop has been featured on "Fact or Fake: Paranormal Files" segment "Truck
Stop Terror", Fox 2 News, several news publication and more! Paranormal Task Force (PTF)

Chiller, Destination America, Travel Chanel and more. Such includes "Children of the Grave",
"The Haunted Boy (The Exorcist File)", “Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files”, "Ghost Adventures"
and more.

This once Route 66 roadside icon formerly known as “The Diamonds” Restaurant has had its
share of tragic moments throughout its past. Started by a young law student with ambitions and
dreams as a roadside stand selling plums in the early 1900’s, it grew to being the world’s
largest roadside restaurant in its heyday. The current building, built in 1950 after the previous
building burnt to the ground in the late 1940’s, became the Tri-County Restaurant and Truck
Stop in 1970 after “The Diamonds” relocated to be nearer to the newly opened Interstate
Highway.

Before closing its doors to the public in September of 2006, employees and customers alike
were experiencing a plethora of paranormal activity. Such experiences and reports included
full-bodied apparitions, eerie shadow figures, objects levitating from one table to another,
kitchen appliances turned off and on, people touched by unseen forces, children reporting
seeing a bloody monster on the stairway, disembodied voices and so much more. Paranormal
Task Force (formerly Missouri Paranormal Research) investigations of 2006 yielded some of the
most phenomenal visual and audible captures to date, validating both employee and customer
experiences at this spine-chilling location.

Your 8 hour learning, fun and sometimes scary adventure into the paranormal realms will start
at 6:00 p.m. with a pre-investigative introductory meeting with Paranormal Task Force, followed
by a informative presentation and walking tour of Tri County Truck Stop! Afterwards you will be

snacks you may have brought and may even be one of the winners of the free attendance raffle

Hall of Waters - Excelsior Springs, MO

This marvelous 5 level building was built in 1936 and features exterior and interior art deco
design with motifs of Mayan Indian tradition relating to water and Water Gods. You will be in
awe with the beauty of this masterpiece design for this massive building! Not only did a mineral
spring run beneath this building, it also piped in the mineral waters from 9 other springs as well
and bottled them for public sale. This building also severed as a spa and used the mineral
waters for holistic treatment for peoples aliments and health. It featured a competition size
swimming pool that was filled with salt water, a therapy pool (polio pool) used for people along
with a men's and woman's spa area for treatment as well. Each spa area would treat up to 300
people at any given time! At its height, the Hall of Waters was the most complete outfitted
health resort in Missouri and possibly the entire region. The Hall of Springs was the longest
mineral water bar in the world!

It is unknown how many deaths occurred within its walls, but with the sick and ailing coming for
their holistic treatments in the past can only make you wonder! People today may have
encounters with those that passed on within its walls as they experience hearing footsteps
from the unseen, voices from the other side, touches from beyond the veil and at times even
experience seeing "The Lady in Red" or other apparitions including unexplained shadow
figures.

Ray County Museum - Richmond, MO

The Ray County Museum was build in 1904 and served as the Poor House, then served as a
Nursing Home before becoming the current museum in the 1970's. There are numerous
documented deaths at this location through its history and also many artifacts which could add
to the paranormal activity as well! Our previous two investigations of this location have
resulted in many unexplainable experiences including captured EVP's and even a visual
anomaly on a thermal imagery.

Paranormal Task Force has been featured in various documentaries and productions which
have aired on SyFy, Chiller, Destination America, Travel Chanel and more. Such shows and
productions include "Children of the Grave", "The Haunted Boy (The Exorcist File)", “Fact or
Faked: Paranormal Files” segment “Truck Stop Terror”, "Ghost Adventures" special 100th
episode, and more.

Individual prices for each event is $60 for either great location which would be a total of $120 to
attend both. Or you can get a special limited combination ticket to attend both for only $100,
saving $20!

This Halloween season, let your first or next ghost adventure be at the historic and haunted
Rodgers Theatre in Poplar Bluff, MO! Why go out to places that use actors, props and costumes
for a fake scare when you can go on a real ghost adventure and possibly experience the real
thing at an actual haunted place!

The Rodgers Theatre was built in 1949 by entrepreneur I.W. Rodgers. It has a unique art deco
combined with art moderne style makes it one of the few surviving buildings with this style
today. In 1998, the theatre closed and in 1999 this historic jewel was donated to the citizens of
Butler County where it is now a non-profit entity undergoing phases of restoration. In 2001 it
was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Prior to the theatre, the land hosted a boarding house. Then boarding house yard was used as
a triage center after the devastation of the great 1927 tornado where over 100 people died in
an instant. Sadly many travelers have met their demise on the adjacent highway, railroad tracks
or by drowning in the nearby Black River. Standing under the existing marquee, you can glance
up the street to the exact spot that the county hung it’s most heinous criminals.

This special weekend features 2 different paranormal adventures! Remember there is room for
plenty of social distancing in the 11,000 plus square foot theatre and the adjacent storefronts
(Maze).

Special Limited Halloween Ghost Adventure
at the Rodgers Theatre in Poplar Bluff, MO
Coming Again Soon in 2021

Paranormal Task Force (PTF)
has been featured in various paranormal shows and documentaries which have aired on SyFy,
Chiller, Destination America, Travel Channel and more.

Your 8 hour special limited adventure into the paranormal realms will start at 7:00 p.m. with a
pre-investigative introductory meeting with Paranormal Task Force, followed by a informative
history and haunting presentation and walking tour of Tri County Truck Stop!

documented deaths at this location through its history and also many artifacts which could add
to the paranormal activity as well! Our previous investigations of this location have resulted in
many unexplainable experiences including captured EVP's and even a visual anomaly on a
thermal imagery.

Timeline

This is a timeline of all known events, shown in chronological order, across all films.

, a member of The Midwives Coven, makes a deal with Toby for wealth and fortune Toby will receive the next baby boy in her family as a result.
  • Kristi meets an "imaginary friend" named Toby, who is actually the demon.
  • Katie interacts with Toby for the first time when he scratches Dennis's friend, Randy, and she witnesses it. and Dennis are killed by Lois and Toby.
  • Lois and the Midwives Coven take custody of Katie and Kristi.
  • In the next four years, the coven, specifically one of their leaders named "Kent", teaches Katie and Kristi how to interact with Toby and explains to them how they have special supernatural powers, in addition to training them to use their powers more effectively.
  • The sisters realize their ability to see through the eyes of Toby remotely through time. They begin viewing the Fleege family through Toby's eyes, who live in a new house on their property in the year 2013. (Their daughter Leila shares the same birthday as Kristi's yet-to-be-born son Hunter, which makes her the ideal candidate to complete a ritual in the future to bring Toby from his supernatural dimension into the real world.)
  • (Following the events of Paranormal Activity 4: At some point after killing Alex, it is implied that Katie sends Hunter through a supernatural portal back to this point in 1992 to await Leila's arrival, as evidenced by his appearance in video tapes from this time period in The Ghost Dimension.)
  • (Following the events of The Ghost Dimension: Toby, along with the final possessed child, Leila, travel through a supernatural portal back to this point in 1992, where he kills her mother Emily. The convergence of Hunter and Leila's presence together presumably completes Toby's invocation and he assumes a corporeal form. He exits the house, free to roam the real world from this point onward. Note that this event isn't present in the timeline until the events of the sixth film unfold, however, as Toby isn't able to enter the real world until all of the events over the subsequent 21 years lead to the completion of his invocation.)

The Featherston house burns down, allowing the coven to later build a new house in the future specifically for the purpose of summoning Toby.

'Paranormal Activity 2' (2010)

A prequel, sequel and parallel story to the first film, "Paranormal Activity 2" introduces us to Katie's older sister, Kristi (Sprague Grayden), and her husband, Dan (Brian Boland). They have an infant son, Hunter, and Dan has a teenage daughter, Ali (Molly Ephraim), from a previous marriage, with Abby the German Shepherd filling the role of family dog.

A couple of months before the events of "Paranormal Activity," Kristi's house is seemingly burglarized, with every room left trashed except for young Hunter's bedroom. The only thing apparently stolen was a necklace that Katie had given Kristi, which will probably have some sort of significance in a later chapter.

Dan has security cameras installed in the house, which provide views of Hunter's room, the kitchen and living room, the front door and staircase and the backyard (gotta go at least somewhat "bigger" for the sequel). He also fires Martine (Vivis Cortez), the family housekeeper and nanny, after she is caught burning sage in an attempt to clean the house of "evil spirits".

Ali begins investigating the "paranormal activity" of the house in earnest after she is lured outside by a strange noise and the front door slams shut behind her, locking her out of the house. She discovers that humans can make deals with demons for wealth or power in exchange for the life of their first-born son . and Hunter happens to be the first male child born in Kristi and Katie's family since the time of their great-great grandmother.

The phenomena increases as, in the film's best jump scare, all of the cabinets in the kitchen suddenly slam open and poor Abby is attacked by an unseen presence. Dan and Ali take the wounded dog to the vet, leaving Kristi alone with Hunter. After Kristi checks on the baby, she is attacked by the demon and dragged into the basement . from which she emerges about an hour later, in a near-catatonic state similar to Katie's during her "sleepwalking" fits in the first film.

The next day Kristi won't get out of bed (demons hate mornings). After hearing noises, Ali investigates the basement, where she finds the Latin word "Meus" ("Mine") scratched into the door (something that, obviously, only a demon would do). She later discovers Kristi in Hunter's bedroom with a strange bite mark on her leg (demon!). Ali shows the security camera footage of Kristi's attack to Dan, who calls Martine and begs her to exorcise the creature that has now possessed his wife. Despite Ali's protests, Dan arranges to have the "curse" passed over to Katie, the only way he can think to save his wife and son.

That night, Kristi attacks Dan when he tries to use the crucifix on her and all the lights in the house go out. Using his camcorder's trusty night vision, Dan tracks Kristi and Hunter to the basement, where he touches her with the crucifix. The ground rumbles and shakes (and not just because of the handheld camera work) and demonic roars are heard until, finally, all of the activity stops. Dan puts Kristi to bed and burns the photo of Katie as a child (the one found in the attic in the first film).

A few weeks later, Katie visits her sister and tells her that some strange things have started happening in her house (ah ha!). Kristi tells her not to talk about it, just as Katie had told her to do before. Katie returns home and finds that Micah has bought a new video camera, which takes us into the events of the first "Paranormal Activity."

The epilogue features a possessed Katie, her shirt bloodied after killing Micah, entering Kristi's house, where she murders both Kristi and Dan and kidnaps Hunter. A title card tells us that Ali, who had been away on a school trip, discovered Kristi and Dan's bodies on Oct. 12, 2006 (the day after police discovered Micah's body) and that the whereabouts of Katie and Hunter are unknown.

Raynham Hall in England has been rumored to be haunted since the early 1800s when King George IV is said to have seen a ghost dressed in brown standing beside his bed. Other visitors reported seeing a similar apparition, often descending the estate's grand staircase, throughout the years. This famous photo was taken in September 1936 by Hubert Provand and Indre Shira, who were assigned to photograph Raynham Hall for Country Life magazine.

October 2006: Paranormal Activity

The first installment in the Paranormal Activity franchise is set in October of 2006. It follows Katie and Micah, a young couple who have recently moved into a new home together. As the film progresses, the supernatural occurrences around the home grow increasingly stronger to the point where Katie becomes possessed. The film ends with her throwing Micah into the camera and supposedly disappearing. While there are other alternative endings, they are not canonical to the franchise. Therefore, this timeline follows the original theatrical ending of Micah dying and Katie disappearing.

What's Really Behind Paranormal Experiences (Hint: It's Not Ghosts)

Richard Wiseman doesn't believe in spooks — and he doesn't think you should, either. Once a professional magician, the University of Hertfordshire psychologist has always been intrigued by the unusual side of the human experience, conducting research on luck, lying and the paranormal.

In his new book, "Paranormality," (Macmillion, 2011), Wiseman delves into the science (or lack thereof) of hauntings, psychics, telepathy and other supposedly inexplicable phenomena.

Americans will have to seek out the book on Kindle, as American publishers told Wiseman there was no market for debunking the paranormal in the U.S. LiveScience begs to differ, so we got in touch with Wiseman to talk about the allure of the occult and why Americans are so fond of psychic hotlines.

LiveScience: Why are people so drawn to paranormal beliefs?

Wiseman: One is that they have paranormal experiences. In fact, that's the thrust of the book, to try to understand why people have those weird experiences given that spirits don't exist. There's also the notion that these believes are very comforting. So if you're ill, then the idea of the psychic healer is a nice idea. And then there's the influence of the paranormal industry. The books, the television shows, the psychic hotlines all have a vested interest in getting the public to believe this stuff. [Read Monsters, Ghosts & Gods: Why We Believe]

LiveScience: So you're not a believer?

Wiseman: No, I tend to be a tad skeptical. I've worked in the field for about 20 years and I've never seen anything that convinces me that any of this stuff is true. What I have seen is that people have weird experiences, whether with Ouija boards or ghosts or a psychic, that tell us about their brains, their behavior and their beliefs.

LiveScience: What does the belief in the paranormal tell us about our own psychology?

Wiseman: I think each one tells us something a little bit different. If you take sleep paralysis, that notion of waking up completely immobile, seeing a figure at the foot of your bed and you're convince that this evil spirit or demonic force is holding you down, that actually tells you a lot about the psychology of sleep. When we sleep, we're paralyzed so we don't act out our dreams, and that dream experience can come over into waking along with that paralysis. [Read: Top 10 Spooky Sleep Disorders]

LiveScience: What, to you, is the most interesting or strange paranormal belief?

Wiseman: I suppose ghosts, or the notion that people see something out of the corner of their eye, particularly if they're in a "haunted" location. It's the power of suggestion, as well as fear. When we become afraid, blood flows from the fingertips from the major muscles of the body as you get ready to run or fight, and that can make you cold. You also become hyper-vigilant, so you start noticing footsteps or voices you wouldn&rsquot have noticed before, and start assuming this is some sort of weird paranormal activity.

LiveScience: You've done some ghost-debunking investigations. What did you find?

Wiseman: These were investigations carried out at Hampton Court Palace, a royal palace south of London, and up in Edinburgh in Scotland, supposedly one of the most haunted places in the U.K. We took people into buildings and asked them what locations seemed haunted. They'd often chose the same locations. Part of the reasons what those locations were sometimes physically colder due to thermal patterns. Sometimes they had this weird sort of infrasound [low-frequency sound] which can be caused by the rumble of traffic or wind across an open window. And other times these spots just sort of look scary because they're dark and we have a brain that has evolved to keep us out of dark places for good reason.

LiveScience: Psychics are a big business, and I understand you've upset some of them by discussing the tricks of the trade in your book. In all of your work, you've found no evidence that psychics have special capabilities?

Wiseman: No, I found they're very good at fooling people —in that case they have very special capabilities, but in deception. Here, paranormal belief crosses over from being fun into something serious. People go to psychics because they have problems, whether personal or financial, but you're talking to somebody who, unlike a counselor who would give you to tools to solve the problems, they just give you advice. You become reliant on them. And there's no way to know if they're giving good advice. They're not trained counselors. There's no regulation in the industry. So you're putting your life into somebody else's hands.

LiveScience: How do psychics make people believe that they're legit?

Wiseman: There's the notion of these general statements which are true of everyone. Like, "you have a lot of unexpressed creativity." Everyone wants to believe that's true of them and not everybody else. Or sometimes there are double-headers like, "sometimes you enjoy being the center of the party and sometimes you like staying at home with a book." That's true of everybody and you're just going to ignore the side that doesn't apply to you. There's this notion of feedback where they'll say something like, "You're going to be travelling," and if they get no response they'll say that maybe it's a small weekend trip, but if you start nodding along, it must be a big trip.

With all of these things, you're doing the work for them. If anything, they should be paying you.

LiveScience: Your book is published in the U.K. and in other countries, but you couldn't find a willing publisher in the U.S. Is there a difference between the paranormal belief in U.S. vs. U.K.?

Wiseman: I don't know quite what causes it, I suspect it's cultural, but you're looking at around 40 to 50 percent of people having an alleged paranormal experience in the U.K. and Europe versus 70 to 80 percent in the U.S.

Something big is going on. I suspect that part of it is programming: Books, radio and television pushing the psychic agenda. Plus of course science literacy is higher in the U.K. versus in America, so maybe you have the psychic industry pushing the one side and the other side can't get their message out. Even though I've published lots of other books in America, this one wasn&rsquot going to happen. There were no serious offers from the major publishers. That's why we put it out on Kindle.

LiveScience: So for those of us with runaway imaginations, do you have any hints on how to talk yourself out of freaking out when you're home alone and the house is creaking and you're sure there's something right behind you?

Wiseman: I think there are all sorts of things. Running away from the house screaming is always good.

No, I think that just knowing what's going on helps. The book encourages people to do Ouija Board sessions. It isn't about summoning the spirits, it's about the players' unconscious movement that push the glass. So you can cut out the letters and lay them out and ask the spirit to spell out your name. But the moment you put the letters face down and mix them up, the spirit will become dyslexic. In the same way, once you understand sleep paralysis, it's not as scary. By understanding these things, they become a lot less terrifying.
